English punctuation

I thought (and read in different books for english-language students) the rule for punctuation in english is:
it's always better to leave your sentence without commas- less you have them, more understandable is your thought.

Look this one:
"A woman without her man is nothing"

Now read these
"A woman, without her man, is nothing."

And what do you think about this:
"A woman: without her, man is nothing."
