The Widows of the Frontier: Waiting for a War That Never Came (1)

Emotional toll of Alpine Warfare. Look up. The mountains before you represent more than just indescribable beauty. They represent the pain and toil of their defenders.

Above Lago Agnel, at 2,300 metres, the ground stops pretending to be gentle. To the right, Punta Violetta climbs to 3,031 metres. To the left, lower and less dramatic, Colle Agnel sits at 2,510.

Emotional toll of Alpine Warfare. Look up. The mountains before you represent more than just indescribable beauty. They represent the pain and toil of their defenders.

And somewhere between the two, tucked along the old military track before the Colle del Nivolet, a square of broken stone and concrete is still holding its shape against the mountain.

It doesn’t look like much. A collapsed wall here, a firing slit there, half-buried in rock that the retreating glaciers polished smooth ten thousand years before anyone thought to build on it. You could walk past it and mistake it for a shepherd’s ruin. It is, in fact, a listening post — a small fragment of one of the strangest defensive projects Italy ever attempted: the Vallo Alpino del Littorio.

A wall that was never tested

In 1931, with the memory of the First World War still raw and the newly built Maginot Line rising across the French border, Mussolini’s general staff ordered the construction of a defensive system that would eventually stretch the length of Italy’s Alpine border — from Ventimiglia on the Ligurian coast to Fiume on the Adriatic. It was meant to make the frontier, in the language of the original directives, “hermetic.” Impenetrable.

In a Flickering Glow

The Rise and Hollow Fall of the Frichignono. Much more than just a name in a dusty ledger.

The tunnel does not merely lead you underground; it swallows you.

The vaulted stone ceiling presses down with the weight of a thousand years, the air turning cold and damp — the temperature of a held breath.

You missed this episode that tells about a flickering glow in a medieval castle. Yes, it’s the 4th part about its secrets

Ahead, a dim amber glow flickers; behind you, a darkness so thick and deliberate it feels like a physical presence. You find yourself walking faster. Everyone does. This is where the castle keeps its oldest secrets, and in Castellengo, secrets have a habit of refusing to stay buried.

The stones here have been watching people arrive since the Middle Ages, but they learned a different kind of silence after the Frichignono arrived. As you walk, the echo of your own footsteps begins to drift. The rhythm falters. It’s a classic trick of the acoustics — or perhaps it’s the sound of the fourteen original noble clans who were slowly, methodically bled out of their inheritance to make room for one name.

Then, there is the door.

A Tale of Tiny Steaks and Smaller Pastries

Every year between Christmas and New Year's, my friends and I engage in what has become our sacred ritual: eating our way through Piedmont while pretending we're not just avoiding their in-laws.

The Village of Secrets: Every Stone Speaks in Symbols

Inside Rosazza—Italy's Most Mysterious Village, Built by Freemasons to Transform the Soul Rosazza, Province of Biella, Piedmont

Sometimes the rain knows something you don’t.

Google promised a dry afternoon, but the sky had other plans. By the time I left my car at the village entrance, the drizzle had turned serious, insistent, the kind of rain that soaks through optimism and practical planning alike.

I had no destination, no agenda—just a pull I couldn’t name, urging me toward Rosazza on this grey November day.

I’d been here before, of course. Many times. But always rushing, always with somewhere else to be. This time, drenched and aimless, I finally saw what I’d been missing.

The Weight She Carried: A Chronicle of the Mountain Markets

Looking for the Slow Life, trying to escape the hectic pace of our lives, is the dream of having a peaceful life like our ancestors. I'll tell you today what their life was really like.

No photo description available.

Your phone has buzzed seventeen times since you started reading this. Mine too. We live in an age where everything arrives instantly, yet nothing feels like it truly lands.

But let me take you somewhere else. To a woman I never met, walking a path I’ll never walk.

A friend told me about his grandmother. Every month, she would fill a wooden chest with whatever her hands had made—preserves, woven goods, vegetables from the terraced garden clinging to the mountainside. Then she would lift that chest onto her head and begin to walk.

The Devil of Piedmont

For many of us, Italy is sun-drenched piazzas, the gentle clink of wine glasses, and the slow, sweet rhythm of days that have unfolded the same way for centuries. It’s a romantic vision, but

For many of us, Italy is sun-drenched piazzas, the gentle clink of wine glasses, and the slow, sweet rhythm of days that have unfolded the same way for centuries. It’s a romantic vision, but

But Italy, like any ancient place, is a palimpsest. Layers of beauty are written over layers of blood and iron.

That's like finding a Viking who still worshiped Thor during the Renaissance. So I went full Indiana Jones to uncover their story… and it's wilder than Game of Thrones.

 The City’s Secret Pulse

Every town has a heartbeat, but hers sang.
Clara had known it since she was six, when she’d pressed her ear to the alleyway behind the bakery and swore the bricks murmured back.

Understanding Social Dynamics: Why Cultural Volunteering Is So Important In My Life

The days I spent this weekend volunteering with FAI, the Italian Environment Fund, led me to think about this phenomenon of cultural volunteering. Interestingly, not only was I very enthusiastic after participating in this initiative, but all the volunteers wrote in the group how happy they were to participate.

Understanding Social Dynamics: Why Cultural Volunteering Is So Important In My Life

This morning, I read an article published in the USA that talked about the running trend, of meetings of people who run all dressed in the same brand's products and thus ultimately forming brand clubs throughout the country and not unions for interests (running, precisely).

How I Plan My Week To Have Two Days Free For Other Tasks

Many people need to live their whole lives according to plan. They get up at a specific time and eat what they should eat following the latest trends. They sit at the computer at a set time and check emails for 15 minutes, and another 15 look for news on the topic they're working on...

Professional Satisfaction - It's Why I Write For Causes And Volunteer For Decades

This is a story I told in my LinkedIn profile. Maybe it could be interesting for you, too.

The greatest professional satisfaction I have yet had is to see the prosperity in Puerto Rican communities, which had lived on the edge of starvation for four hundred years before I wrote my advertisement. -- Ogilvy

The first time I wrote for a cause happened many years ago.

Organizers of a summer camp for underprivileged children from a US state (which I can't remember now) reached out to me for help. I believe it was in 2006 or 2007. At that time, I had a blog on Blogger where I wrote in English.

I wrote an article and posted it on my blog. I also shared it across various platforms as I usually did — submitting the website URLs to blog aggregators and promoting it on social media.

After writing the article, I completely forgot about it. My intention was simply to help in any way I could. I didn't think that someone living in Italy could assist someone in the United States with their writing.

To my surprise, in the following fall, I received an email from the organization expressing their gratitude for my help. They even included photos from the summer camp. As a teacher, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. It served as confirmation that the world is small and that even small steps can make a difference.

Since then, I no longer doubt that I can contribute in my small way to improving the world. We don't have to spend our entire lives searching for a grand purpose to turn the world upside down. Just do what you are trained to do, no matter how small, and it can make a difference.
